The active ingredient in Allergan pharmaceutical company’s product is a neurotoxic protein called botulinum toxin. There are variations on the botulinum toxin used for aesthetic and medical applications, such as Dysport® and Xeomin®, but there is only one BOTOX Cosmetic.
The specific protein used by Allergan is onabotulinumtoxinA. Competitors such as Dysport may be similar, but only the onabotulinumtoxinA protein produced and sold by this manufacturer can be sold as BOTOX injections.
