Why are patients throughout Edmond and Oklahoma City, OK, seeking medical marijuana evaluations from Dr. Jayne?
A Natural Solution with Many Advantages
Safer Medical Treatment
Evidence suggests that medical marijuana is a safer way to manage pain than using pharmaceuticals. For example, a study found that deaths resulting from an overdose of pain killers fell 25 percent in states that allow medical cannabis.
More Attractive Alternative
A recent collaborative study conducted by Kent State University and other institutions found that among nearly 3,000 patients, 93 percent preferred cannabis to opioids for pain management.
Versatile Applications
Oklahoma is unique among medical marijuana programs across the country in that the state allows a physician to give any patient a recommendation if they think medical marijuana will benefit them. There is no state-curated list of conditions a patient must have in order to qualify.
What Is Cannabis and How Does It Work?
Marijuana produces compounds called cannabinoids that are responsible for its physical and psychoactive effects. The two most prominent cannabinoids are THC (psychoactive) and CBD (non-psychoactive). CBD can make the psychoactive effects of THC less intense, helping to balance the effects of the drug.
CBD and THC are chemically similar to endocannabinoids (neurotransmitters produced naturally in the human body), allowing them to interact with your cannabinoid receptors. Neurotransmitters relay messages between cells, playing important roles in immune function, stress, pain, sleep, and more. THC can address inflammation, for example, by activating receptors on immune cells and reducing the body’s pain response.

Are There Side-Effects or Risks?
Our patients from Edmond can benefit from this therapy, but it is important to understand that there are side-effects and risks that require caution and responsibility on your part. You can also expect non-serious side-effects when medicating:
Inebriation
While under the influence of medical marijuana–especially products with a high level of THC–your coordination and judgment are compromised. It is illegal and unsafe to drive while under the influence of medical marijuana. If you need to go somewhere while you are medicated, arrange to have a friend or loved one drive you, or call a taxi or rideshare service.
Overwhelming Psychoactive Effects
Too much THC can cause some patients to experience intense feelings of paranoia and anxiety. It is recommended that patients start with very low doses and slowly work up to an amount that provides the desired effects. If you happen to begin experiencing this side effect, it is recommended that you take measures to relax (such as reading or listening to music) in an environment where you feel safe, such as your bedroom.
Red Eyes
Many patients experience red eyes when medicating, especially when using cannabis with a high level of THC. However, this does not affect the quality of your vision or your comfort.
Dry Mouth
Patients can also experience dry mouth when medicating. Drinking water, herbal teas, and other caffeine-free beverages is the best way to manage this side effect.
Which Type of Medical Marijuana Is Right for Me?
Once you receive your medical marijuana license, you will visit a dispensary to select your strain of medical marijuana. Dr. Jayne can explain the characteristics, effects, and advantages of each strain to help you choose a medical marijuana treatment type that gives you the desired effects. Because there are many different ways to use marijuana, Dr. Jayne can also help you choose an intake method that works for you.
How Do I Become Approved for Medical Marijuana Use in Oklahoma?
Oklahoma legalized this option with the passing of SQ 788 in 2018. Under this law, you must be 18 years old (minors must have a caregiver who is registered with the state to purchase marijuana products from a dispensary for the patient) and have:
- Proof of Oklahoma residency
- Proof of identification
- A full-face color digital photo
- A physician recommendation form signed by a licensed physician/doctor such as Dr. Jayne
Patients must pass an evaluation with Dr. Jayne to receive a recommendation. After a successful evaluation, you must submit the recommendation form along with all other required documents to the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA) online within 30 days.

Where Do I Purchase Cannabis?
Cannabis can be purchased from a dispensary near you. Since medical marijuana became legal in Edmond and throughout Oklahoma, many dispensaries have opened in the state. Once you have found a dispensary you wish to visit, bring along your state-issued medical marijuana card and your photo identification to gain admittance and purchase cannabis products.
Consuming Medical Marijuana
Medical marijuana can be used in five primary ways:
Smoking
The most common means of using cannabis is smoking the cured flower, either by rolling it into a cigarette, purchasing a pre-rolled marijuana cigarette, or using a pipe. The advantage of this method is that the onset of the effects begins within seconds.
Vaporizing
This method is similar to smoking, but instead of burning the cured flower or cannabis concentrate, a special device is used to apply fast and intense heat that results in vaporization. The mist is then inhaled like smoke. As with smoking, the onset of the effects is fast.
Edibles
Cannabis can be used to make various confections, candies, mints, chewing gum, and other foods that are eaten in order to experience the medicinal effects. Unlike smoking or vaporizing, edibles have a delayed onset of effects that could occur an hour or longer after ingestion. Time-release capsules are also available to provide steady, yet moderate effects.
Tinctures
Tinctures are taken orally. They usually consist of an oil (such as coconut oil) infused with THC, CBD, or both. Using a dropper, the patient places one or more drops under the tongue, where the medicine is absorbed. As with edibles, this method has a delayed onset of effects.
Topical Products
THC and CBD can be used as ingredients in topical creams, lotions, bath salts, and more. These methods do not have psychoactive effects; instead, they are recommended for treating localized pain or inflammation. There are also transdermal patches available (similar to nicotine patches) that provide these benefits as well as mild, gradual psychoactive effects.
Financing Medical Marijuana
There are a few costs associated with obtaining a medical marijuana card and the medicine itself. There is a $100 application fee, with a discounted fee of $20 if you are enrolled in Medicaid (SoonerCare) or Medicare, or are a 100% disabled veteran. While medical marijuana isn’t usually covered by health insurance, some Medicare plans may cover part of the cost of cannabis-based medicines that are FDA-approved.
